Day trips from Baku and the kilometre limit

, 3 min read

250 km a day is included in the price. Gobustan and Shamakhi fit into one day; Guba does not: there and back is about 340 km.

Each rental day includes 250 km, or 200 km in the premium class. The limit counts over the whole rental: rent for 3 days and you have 750 km to spread however you like. Rentals of 8 days or more have unlimited kilometres, except in the premium class. Each kilometre over the limit is charged at the class rate: ₼0.20 in economy, ₼0.40 in a 4×4.

How far it is from Baku

Approximate distance from Baku; the last column assumes 250 km a day

Gobustan65 km130 km1 day
Shamakhi120 km240 km1 day
Guba170 km340 km2 days
Gabala225 km450 km2 days
Shaki300 km600 km3 days

Distances are to the town centre. Detours to villages, waterfalls or the forest add to the total, so allow for them.

An example: Guba in a day

In economy, say a Kia Rio, you drive to Guba and back the same day: about 340 km. That is 90 km over the 250 km included, at ₼0.20 a kilometre: ₼18 in all. It is worked out from the odometer when you return the car.

If you are staying the night in Guba, take two days: 500 km is included and nothing is left over. Taking a second day only for the limit does not pay, though: the second day costs ₼55, the extra kilometres ₼18.

Gabala or Shaki in one day is tiring and costs more: 200 km over the limit for Gabala, 350 km for Shaki. Allow at least 2 days for Gabala and 3 days for Shaki.

Several regions: look at 8 days

If you are touring several regions in one trip, rent for 8 days: the kilometres become unlimited and the daily price drops. A Kia Rio costs ₼357 for 7 days and ₼368 for 8 days: ₼11 more buys an extra day and no limit.

If you do not want to drive back, you can return the car in another town: Sumgait ₼20, Guba ₼60, Gabala ₼80, Shaki ₼100, Ganja ₼120.

Which car for which road

  • Gobustan, Shamakhi, Guba, Gabala and Shaki: the main roads to the town centres are tarmac, and an economy or comfort car does the job. Four people with suitcases will want a comfort saloon for the bigger boot.
  • Khinalug, Laza and other mountain villages: the roads are narrow and steep, and slippery after rain. Take an all-wheel-drive crossover (Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Hyundai Santa Fe) or a 4×4 (Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Toyota Land Cruiser 200).
  • The Kia Sportage is a crossover but front-wheel drive: comfortable on tarmac, not one we suggest for a mountain village.

When do you get your deposit back?

The deposit is ₼200 to ₼1,000, depending on the class. A cash deposit is handed back when you return the car; if it is held on a card, we release the hold the same day.
