What happens when a speed-camera or parking fine arrives

, 3 min read

A fine is issued to the car’s owner, which is us, and arrives 1–3 weeks late. When it does, we send it to you on WhatsApp with the photo and you pay it online yourself.

The camera photographs the number plate, and the fine is issued to the company the car is registered to. It usually reaches us 1–3 weeks later. By then the car is back with us, the deposit has been returned, and quite often our customer has flown home.

What we do when a fine arrives

  1. We match the date and time of the fine against our contracts to see who had the car at that moment.
  2. We send the camera photo and the payment details on WhatsApp to the number in the contract.
  3. You pay the fine online yourself and send us a photo of the receipt.

We do not take fines from the deposit and we do not pay them on your behalf. An unpaid fine is invoiced separately. For companies, fines also appear in the monthly report.

If the car in the photo or the time does not match your rental, message us. We check the contract and the handover time; if the fine is not yours, we deal with it ourselves.

Why the contract names every driver

The fine is issued to the car; the contract shows who was driving. If a friend will drive too, have them added as an additional driver: it is free, and the same requirements apply, at least 21 years old with 2 years of driving, more in some classes.

Handing the wheel to someone not named in the contract is not allowed. If it happens anyway, the person who signed the contract stays responsible for any fine and any damage.

Under a company contract several employees can drive the same car. We name each of them in the contract, but when a fine arrives it is the company that knows who was at the wheel that day, not us.

How to avoid fines

These are our own tips for customers, not the wording of the law:

  • Keep to the speed limit shown on the signs. It changes often in town and on the way out of it; trust the sign, not the sat nav.
  • On the motorway, set the cruise control to the limit on the sign. Every car in the fleet has it except the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio.
  • In the centre, look for a paid-parking sign before you stop at the kerb. If in doubt, use a shopping centre or hotel car park.
  • If you will be stopping a lot in the centre and do not know the city, take the car with a driver, who will find somewhere to park. A driver in Baku is ₼70 a day.

When do you get your deposit back?

The deposit is ₼200 to ₼1,000, depending on the class. A cash deposit is handed back when you return the car; if it is held on a card, we release the hold the same day.
