Choosing a washing machine: load, spin and depth

Take 5 to 6 kg for one or two people, 7 kg for a family of three or four, and 8 to 10 kg for five or more. A 7 kg drum holds a double bed set and four or five towels in one wash.

Both machines in our catalogue take 7 kg: the Hotpoint-Ariston NSWM 743U and the Indesit BWSE 71252X. A thick winter duvet needs a drum of more than 8 kg; with a 7 kg machine it is better to send it to the dry cleaner.

The spin speed decides how damp the laundry comes out of the drum. At 1,400 rpm cotton comes out drier and dries a few hours sooner on a winter balcony. 1,200 rpm is enough for everyday washing, and the wool and delicates programmes spin at 600 to 800 rpm anyway.

The Hotpoint spins at 1,400 rpm and has a steam programme for children’s clothes and bed linen. It costs ₼899. The Indesit spins at 1,200 rpm and costs ₼749.

Front-loaders are nearly all the same width and height: 60 × 85 cm. The difference is the depth. The Indesit is 43.5 cm deep and fits a narrow bathroom or under a kitchen worktop; the Hotpoint is 57.5 cm.

When you measure, leave 5 cm at the back for the hoses and room in front for the door to open fully. Measure the front door and the bathroom door too: the machine has to pass through them.
