About the tour

In the morning we head south to Gobustan: the reserve’s museum and the hunters, boats and animals cut into its rocks. From there local drivers take us up to the mud volcanoes. After lunch on the road we cross to the Absheron peninsula for the Ateshgah fire temple in Surakhani and, close to sunset, the flame of Yanardag that never goes out. The guide speaks Azerbaijani, English and Russian, so the group often includes visitors to Baku.

What you will see

  • Gobustan reserve: on the UNESCO list, more than 6,000 rock carvings
  • Mud volcano craters, walked right up to
  • Ateshgah in Surakhani: the fire temple built by Indian merchants
  • Yanardag: natural gas burning on a hillside, best at sunset

From people who went

  • I had one day left after a work trip to Baku. An English-speaking guide, a small group, and the volcanoes were stranger than I expected. We reached Yanardag at sunset.
