The brief

Part of a 12-inch line in shallow water off Pirallahi had been weakened by corrosion and carried 38 temporary clamps fitted over the years. The client wanted the whole section replaced.

How the work went

  • The line lay in up to 4 m of water: pipe was welded into strings on the shore and lowered into the water.
  • Every weld was ultrasonically tested and the joints were coated.
  • The crew reached the site by work boat every day; 7 days were lost to the sea, and the schedule had allowed for them.
  • The new section passed a 24-hour hydrotest.

Result

2.6 km of pipe replaced in 64 days; the line came back on stream on the planned date.

The client’s words
Weather stand-by was in the schedule from the start, so the deadline held.
